The Badminton European Championships 2022, held in Madrid, concluded on Saturday 30th April 2022.

It saw Carolina Marin take a sixth consecutive European Championships title in the women’s singles. What made it even more impressive is was the fact this was Marin’s comeback following another career-threatening knee injury.

Women’s Singles

Marin took on Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour in the final winning 21-10, 21-12 with the match lasting just 42 minutes.

Speaking after the final Marin said

“I played better today in the final. It is not easy to control in front of these amazing spectators at home. I took all the energy and power they gave me during the match, and wanted everyone to enjoy me on the court”.

Men’s Singles

The men’s singles final was contested by two Danes, Viktor Axelsen and Anders Antonsen. The match between the two however failed to live up to the billing with Axelsen winning 21-17, 21-15.

Axelsen said after the game

It wasn’t the most beautiful game. It was hard to control the shuttle and produce a high quality. I didn’t use too much energy throughout the tournament, but it was about being able to win.

Viktor Axelsen

Meanwhile a frustrated Anders Antonsen spoke after the match saying

I am really disappointed. I could not get my game going, too many mistakes and no consistency.

Anders Antonsen

Viktor is the number one player in the badminton rankings for a reason, he wins the big tournaments.

He won the All England Open 2022 Badminton Championships back in March beating Indian player Lakshya Sen.

You can see the match winning point below.

Women’s Doubles

The women’s doubles saw sisters Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva take the title as many predicted. They beat Linda Efler/ Isabel Lohau comfortably 21-14, 21-10.

Here’s the moment they claimed victory.

Men’s Doubles

The men’s double saw Mark Lamsfuss / Marvin Seidel take on Scotland’s Alexander Dunn / Adam Hall in the final. The match took just over 30 minutes with German pair winning the match 21-17, 21-16.

You can see the winning point below.

Mixed Doubles

In the mixed doubles final Lamsfuss partnered Isabel Lohau as the pair took on France’s Thom Gicquel / Delphine Delrue. This final went to three games with Germans taking the title 16-21, 22-20, 21-16.

Final Thought – Badminton’s European Championships 2022

Mark Lamsfuss claimed two gold’s while his mixed doubles partner Lohau took home gold and silver medals took home a gold and silver.

The Stovea sisters continue their recent good form while it was business as usual for Viktor. Those I think the story of this particular tournament must be Carolina Marin’s amazing return.
