Badminton Winners & Losers – European Games 2019
The European Games 2019 have just concluded having been held in Minsk, Belarus between the 21- 30 June 2019. It featured a whole host of sports including badminton. It proved to be an extremely successful games on the badminton front for Team GB.
GB’s Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge claimed gold in badminton’s men’s doubles. They were up against Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen. They won the match 21-17, 21-10.
Meanwhile Kirsty Gilmour took the silver medal in the women’s singles. She lost 21-16, 21-17 in the final to Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt.

The men’s singles final was contested by Anders Antonsen (Denmark) and Brice Leverdez (France). The final went to three games with Antonsen winning the match 21-19, 14-21, 21-10 meaning it was he that took the gold medal.
The women’s doubles saw the gold medal going to the Netherlands pair of Selena Piek / Cheryl Seinen. They were up against the British pair, Chloe Birch and Lauren Smith who had to settle for silver. The match went to three games ending 14-21, 21-13, 21-15.
The mixed doubles final was an all British affair with Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith taking on Chris and Gaby Adcock. They beat the Adcock’s 21-14, 21-9 meaning that Ellis came away from the European Games with two gold medals.
Team GB ended with two gold medals and two silver medals in the badminton. Hopefully that will result in increased funding for the sport over the coming years.

The European Games 2019 featured 15 different sports and around 4000 athletes competing in 200 events. Ten of the sports provided Olympic qualifications for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
