The BWF World Senior Championships 2017 took place in India between the 11th – 17th September 2017. In essence this is a tournament for senior player that is held every two years for players aged 35 and above.
To make things fair the badminton BWF World Senior Championships 2017 consists of several different age categories. Those categories are as broken down as follows: +35, +40, +45, +50, +55, +60 +65 and +70
The tournament also consists of the usual, singles, doubles and mix doubles competitions. Medals are awarded with the winners receiving gold, the runners-up silver and third place the bronze.
Who selects the players to compete in the BWF World Senior Championships 2017?
Each badminton member associations are allowed to send up to four player/pairs in each of the five events per age category.
So now we know exactly what the BWF World Senior Championships are all about it’s time to take a look at this year’s winners.
BWF World Senior Championships 2017 – Badminton Results Round-up
India recorded their best ever medals haul taking a rather impressive 21 medals, including one gold, four silver and sixteen bronze. Their gold medal coming in the men’s doubles age +35 category with an all Indian final, KT Rupesh Kuma / Sanave Thomas beating JBS Vidyadhar / V.Diju.
Thailand put in a strong showing in both singles and doubles across all age groups. With wins coming in the men’s doubles age groups +40, +45 and +55. In the men’s singles age group +50 Karoon Kasayapanan took gold as did Pornroj Banditpisut in the age +55 group.
Russia performed well at The BWF World Senior Championships 2017 taking gold in both the men’s and women’s age +35 groups with Stanislav Pukhov and Olga Arkhangelsk respectively. Not content with cleaning up in singles +35 age group they also won both the women’s and mixed doubles in the same age category proving their dominance.
Meanwhile Japan was amongst the medals with gold coming in the men’s singles age +40 category with Hosemari Fujimoto.
Other winners
England also had a good championship with the doubles proving to be their strength. That said Sue Sheen did finish second in the women’s singles age +55 group. The gold medals came in the women’s doubles age +45 (Tracey Middleton / Joanne Muggeridge), mixed doubles age +45 (Nick Ponting / Julie Bradbury) and the women’s doubles age +50 (Betty Blair / Debora Miller)
Germany won in the women’s singles age groups +40 and +50 with Claudia Vogelsang and Heidi Bender.
