Germany’s top badminton player Marc Zwiebler has officially retired from international badminton. Speaking with his sponsor and equipment supplier Yonex on their Facebook page he expressed his mixed emotions on playing his last match whilst detailing some of his future plans.

He finished his international career at this year’s Badminton World Championship’s that recently took place in Glasgow, Scotland at the end of August.

Top German Badminton Player Marc Zwiebler RetiresMarc Zwiebler, playing in the singles went out in three games in the last 32 round match against Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan. He lost 22-20, 18-21, 14-21 in a match lasting one hour and eight minutes.

Now aged 33 he has certainly had fairly long career concentrating on the singles side of things. He turned professional in 1994 and went on to make his international debut in 2003. His style of play has been categorised as more of a defensive type. He ends his international career ranked number twenty in the world.

Zwiebler has struggled to break into the top 10 of the men’s singles hovering just outside for the most part whilst achieving number ten on a couple of occasions.

Marc Zwiebler stats read as follows with the men’s singles clearly the main focus:

Men's Singles577374203
Men's Doubles421923
Mixed Doubles303

His 2017 stats end with him playing 18 matches winning 10 and losing 8.

Marc Zwiebler also played a few doubles matches (Men’s & Mixed) earlier in his career but clearly found he was a far better singles player.

He has had a long and solid badminton career that’s had its ups and downs. One such down was a lengthy lay off due to injury. Badminton is indeed a physically demanding sport that relies on very quick reflexes. And with that Marc’s international career at least, comes to a close.
