Badminton News – German Open 2022 Round-up

The German Open 2022 started on the 8th March and concluded on Sunday 13th March 2022. It produced some shocks along the way plus some truly scintillating badminton.

Let’s take a look at which badminton players shone in Germany along with a couple of noteworthy performances.

Men’s Singles WinnerKunlavut Vitidsarn (THA)
Women’s Singles WinnerHe Bing Jiao (CHN)
Men’s Doubles WinnerGoh Sze Fei / Nur Izzuddin (MAS)
Women’s Doubles WinnerChen Qing Chen / Jia Yi Fan (CHN)
Mixed Doubles WinnerDechapol Puavaranukroh / Sapsiree Taerattanachai (THA)

Men’s Singles

The German Open 2022 saw Indian player Lakshya Sen produced a shock in the semi-finals beating Viktor Axelsen over three games.

He would go on to lose in the final to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-18 & 21-15.

Women’s Singles

The women’s final was contested by He Bing Jiao and Chen Yu Fei. It was Bing Jiao who came out victorious winning 21-14, 27-25.

Men’s Doubles

Malaysian badminton players Goh Sze Fei / Nur Izzuddin took the Men’s doubles crown winning 23-21, 16-21, 21-14. They beat China’s Liu Yu Chen / Ou Xuan Yi in three games.

Women’s Doubles

Probably the German Open’s most gripping encounter came in women’s doubles with Stoeva sisters taking on China’s Chen Qing Chen / Jia Yi Fan.

The Chinese pair eventually won out but credit should also go to Gabriela / Stefani Stoeva who produced some fabulous badminton.

The match ended 21-16, 29-30, 21-19 and you can see some of hightlights below.


Mixed Doubles

Finally the mixed doubles saw Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh / Sapsiree Taerattanachai take on China’s Ou Xuan Yi / Huang Ya Qiong. It was a comfortable win for the Thai pair winning 21-11, 21-9.

The mixed doubles also saw England’s Marcus Ellis / Lauren Smith reach the semi-finals but they lost to Ou Xuan Yi / Huang Ya Qiong in a close match 21-18, 21-19.

Meanwhile in the other semi-final Scotland’s Adam Hall / Julie McPherson lost out to Dechapol Puavaranukroh / Sapsiree Taerattanachai 21-11, 21-17 having had a fabulous German Open.
